# Does Instagram Notify When You Unfollow Someone? Unfollow, Remove, Block, Restrict and Mute Compared

By [UnfollowerTrack Team](https://unfollowertrack.com/how-we-check) - November 4, 2026 - 6 min read

No. Instagram's help page says "people won't be notified when you unfollow them." Removing a follower, blocking, restricting and muting are silent too. The other person can still notice an unfollow, because your name leaves their followers list and their count drops by one.

Key takeaways

- Unfollowing someone sends them no notification. Instagram says so on its unfollow help page.
- Removing a follower, blocking, restricting and muting are silent too, according to Instagram.
- Unfollowing works one way. They still follow you and still see your posts unless you remove them too.
- The other person can still find out by checking their followers list, their follower count or a tracker that compares lists.
- A follow that you undo a moment later may already have sent them a "started following you" alert.

## Does Instagram tell someone when you unfollow them?

No. Instagram's [help page on unfollowing](https://help.instagram.com/286340048138725/) says it plainly: "People won't be notified when you unfollow them." Its [list of what you get notified about](https://help.instagram.com/124119401075803/) covers likes, comments, mentions, tags, new followers and follow requests. Unfollows aren't on it.

There's one exception, covered below: a follow you undo a moment later.

Silent doesn't mean invisible. When you unfollow someone, your name leaves their followers list and their count drops by one. Anyone who checks can see that.

Unfollowing also works only one way. They still follow you and still see your posts. To stop that, remove them as a follower too. If your account is private, removing them is what cuts their access.

## Unfollow vs. remove, block, restrict and mute: what do they see?

Instagram gives you five ways to step back from someone. Here they are side by side, with what Instagram says about each (checked November 2026).

| Action | Do they get a notification? | What changes for them | Can they still tell? |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| **Unfollow** | No. ["People won't be notified when you unfollow them."](https://help.instagram.com/286340048138725/) | You leave their followers list. Their count drops by one. | Yes, if they check their followers, their count or a tracker. |
| **Remove follower** | No. ["They won't be notified that you've removed them."](https://help.instagram.com/413012278753813/) | They stop following you. Your posts leave their feed. | Yes, if they notice your posts are gone or see a **Follow** button on your profile. |
| **Block** | No. ["People aren't notified when you block them."](https://help.instagram.com/447613741984126/) | They stop following you. They can't find your profile, posts or stories. | Often, because your profile seems to disappear for them. |
| **Restrict** | No. You can restrict someone ["without alerting them."](https://about.instagram.com/blog/tips-and-tricks/restrict-mute-block-report-guide) | They can't see when you're online. Their new comments on your posts show only to them. | Hard to tell. Their comments still look normal to them. |
| **Mute** | No. Instagram ["won't let them know that you muted them."](https://help.instagram.com/469042960409432/) | Nothing. You still follow them. | Not directly. |

Only unfollow, remove and block change who follows whom. So only those three show up in a followers list, a count or a tracker. Restrict and mute leave both lists alone.

### What else changes when you block or restrict someone?

Blocking does more than end the follow. According to Instagram's page on [what happens when you block someone](https://help.instagram.com/447613741984126/):

- Their likes and comments are removed from your photos and videos, and unblocking doesn't bring them back.
- They can't mention your username or tag you.
- They can't message you, and messages they try to send aren't delivered later if you unblock them.

A comment that vanished or a tag that won't work is often the first clue.

Restricting is quieter. Their chat with you moves to **Message requests**, and you can read their messages without them knowing you've seen them. You stop getting notifications for their comments, and they can't tag or mention you. Nothing changes on your profile for them.

Who unfollowed you?

Start with a check. With Premium, we keep checking for you and email you the name of anyone who leaves.

## How do you unfollow someone without them knowing?

Unfollowing is always silent, so there's no special mode to look for. Here's how to do it in the app:

1. Go to the profile of the person you want to unfollow.
2. Tap **Following** near the top of their profile.
3. Tap **Unfollow** to confirm.

If their account is private, you lose access to their posts and stories. Following them again means sending a new follow request, and Instagram does notify people about those.

Unfollowing a lot of accounts in one go is a different worry. Read about [Instagram's unfollow limits](https://unfollowertrack.com/blog/instagram-unfollow-limit) before you start a big clean-up.

## What if you followed them by accident?

Following someone sends them a "started following you" notification, and Instagram may also send it to their phone as a push alert. Unfollowing doesn't send anything new.

Instagram's help pages don't say whether the first alert is removed from their activity after you unfollow. And if a push alert already showed on their lock screen, unfollowing can't take that back.

So if you followed by mistake, unfollow right away. It may stop them from seeing it, but it's not a sure thing.

The same goes for follow requests to private accounts. A request sends its own notification, so a request you send and then cancel may still have been seen.

## How could they still find out you unfollowed them?

There are three ways, and none of them need a notification.

**Their followers list.** If they search their followers for your username, you won't be there. It's the usual way to confirm a hunch about one person.

**Their follower count.** Their count drops by one. On a small account, that's easy to notice. On a big one, it gets lost in daily ups and downs.

**A tracker that compares lists.** A tracker saves someone's followers list and compares it with a later read. Anyone missing from the newer list shows up as someone who left. This works whether or not they suspected you.

A smaller hint: Instagram shows a **Follows you** label on the profile of someone who follows you. If they visit your profile after you unfollow, that label is gone.

Want to know who unfollowed _you_? Instagram won't tell you, but [our unfollower tracker](https://unfollowertrack.com/) can. With Premium, we keep checking your followers list and email you the name of anyone who leaves. We need only your username, no password, and it works on public accounts. Tracking starts the day Premium starts. The manual way is in [how to see who unfollowed you on Instagram](https://unfollowertrack.com/blog/how-to-see-who-unfollowed-you-on-instagram).

## Mute, unfollow, remove, restrict or block: which to pick?

Pick the action by what you want to stop.

| You want to | Use | Why |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Stop seeing their posts, but stay connected | **Mute** | Nothing changes on their side. |
| Stop following them | **Unfollow** | Silent, but your name leaves their followers list. |
| Stop them seeing your posts in their feed | **Remove follower** | They stop following you. If you're private, they need a new request to see your posts. |
| Limit their comments and messages quietly | **Restrict** | Their comments stay hidden unless you approve them. |
| Cut contact completely | **Block** | They can't find your profile, posts or stories. |

Clearing out accounts that never followed you back? Start with a list of them. [See your Instagram non-followers](https://unfollowertrack.com/instagram-non-followers) and decide who to unfollow from there.

## What a tracker would show them

If the other person uses a tracker, here's what it can and can't pick up.

- **A block looks like an unfollow.** A block ends the follow, and on a list a missing name looks the same whatever the reason.
- **A mute or restrict shows nothing.** Neither changes a list.
- **Deleted and deactivated accounts look like unfollows too.** The account drops off the list, and from outside that can't be told apart from someone leaving.
- **If their account is private, no outside tracker can read it.** Their lists are hidden from anyone they haven't approved.

## Frequently asked questions

### Can people see when you unfollow them on Instagram?

Not through a notification. Instagram doesn't send one. They can see it if they look, though. Your name is gone from their followers list, their count is one lower, and a tracker that saved their list will show your name as someone who left.

### If I follow and unfollow someone quickly, do they get a notification?

They might. Following sends a "started following you" notification, and unfollowing doesn't send a second one to cancel it. Instagram doesn't say whether it removes the first alert from their activity. If it already showed on their phone, they may have seen it.

### If I unfollow and follow someone again, will they know?

Probably. Following again sends a new "started following you" notification. If their account is private, you have to send a new follow request, and they get notified about that too.

### Can I still see someone's stories after I unfollow them?

If their account is public, yes. You can open their profile and watch their stories, but your name shows up in their story viewers, which can give the unfollow away. If their account is private, you lose access to their stories and posts.

### Does removing a follower notify them?

No. Instagram's help page says they won't be notified that you removed them. They stop following you, so your posts stop showing in their feed. If your account is private, they'd have to send a new follow request to see your posts again.
