# Instagram engagement rate calculator

Type a username to get the engagement rate of its last 12 posts. Or type your own numbers.

## Quick answer

Instagram engagement rate is the average number of likes and comments per post, divided by followers. Type a username above and we work it out from the last 12 posts, leaving out pinned posts and posts with hidden likes. Or type your own totals. 260 likes and comments per post on 10,000 followers is 2.6%.

## How to use it

1. Type the username, or paste a link to the profile. To use your own numbers instead, tap Type the numbers.
2. Tap Calculate. We read the last 12 posts and show the rate, usually within seconds.
3. Look at the bars to see which posts did best. Check again next month to see how the rate moved.

## The formula, worked out

Engagement rate = (likes + comments) / posts / followers x 100. Say an account has 10,000 followers, and its last 12 posts got 3,000 likes and 120 comments in total. That's 3,120 likes and comments, or 260 per post. 260 / 10,000 = 0.026, so the rate is 2.6%. Posts with hidden likes are left out. Instagram shows their like count only to the owner, and counting them as 0 likes would pull the rate down for no reason. The result says how many: "12 posts, 1 with hidden likes left out" means the rate comes from 11 posts. Pinned posts are left out too. A pinned post can be much older than the rest, and it would mix old numbers into a recent rate. Typed numbers use the same formula, so you can check our math, or work out the rate of your own private account.

## What it shows

- The engagement rate to two decimals, like 2.60%, and how it moved since your last look.
- Average likes and average comments per post.
- How many posts were used, and how many were left out for hidden likes.
- Likes and comments of each post as a bar, oldest to newest, with reels in purple.
- The best post, with a link that opens it on Instagram.
- Posts a week, the split between photos and reels, and reel views per follower when the account has reels.
- A flag when posts get many likes but very few comments: under 1 comment for every 200 likes.

## What it can't show

- Reach, saves, shares or story views. Only the account owner sees those.
- Whether followers are real or bought. The few-comments flag is a pattern, not proof.
- Posts older than the last 12, or a history of past rates. Your last look stays in this browser, not with us.
- Posts of a private account. If it's yours, type its numbers in yourself.

The rate divides by every follower, active or not. The other side of a clean account is who you follow: see your [Instagram non-followers](https://unfollowertrack.com/instagram-non-followers), the accounts you follow that don't follow you back.

## Questions

### How do you calculate engagement rate on Instagram?

Add up the likes and comments on a set of posts, divide by the number of posts, then divide by followers and multiply by 100. For 12 posts with 3,000 likes and 120 comments on an account with 10,000 followers: 3,120 / 12 = 260, and 260 / 10,000 x 100 = 2.6%. This calculator does it for the last 12 posts of any public account, or for numbers you type.

### What is a good engagement rate on Instagram?

Instagram doesn't publish one. The studies that do use different formulas, posts and account sizes, so their numbers don't line up with each other. Compare like with like instead: your rate this month against your rate last month, or against accounts of a similar size in your niche, measured the same way here. A rate that holds steady while followers grow means likes and comments grew just as fast.

### Why are posts with hidden likes left out?

When an account hides like counts, Instagram shows the number only to the owner. Counting those posts as 0 likes would make the rate look lower than it is, so we leave them out and the result says how many. Their comments are left out too, so each post counts whole. If every recent post hides its likes, there's no rate to work out by username, but the owner can type the numbers.

### Can I check the engagement rate of a private account?

Not by username. A private account's posts can't be read, so the result says the account is private, and it doesn't use one of your 3 lookups. If it's your own account, open your last posts in the app, add up the likes and comments, and tap Type the numbers. That works for any account, private or public.

### Why is my rate different on other calculators?

Calculators use different formulas. Some divide by reach instead of followers, some add saves and shares, some count video views, and some use the last 10, 20 or 30 posts, pinned ones included. This one uses likes plus comments per post, divided by followers, over the last 12 posts that aren't pinned and don't hide likes. To compare rates, use the same calculator each time.

### What does "many likes, very few comments" mean?

It shows when the posts average at least 100 likes but get fewer than 1 comment for every 200 likes. A like takes one tap and a comment takes effort, so comments are always fewer, but a gap this wide is worth a look. It can come from one viral post, comments turned off, or likes that didn't come from real people. It's a pattern, not proof.
