# Instagram fonts

Type your text, then copy any of 60 styles into your bio, a caption or a comment.

## Quick answer

Instagram has no font setting, so Instagram fonts are look-alike letters from Unicode, the character set every phone uses. Type your text above, tap Copy next to a style, and paste it into your bio, a caption or a comment. They paste anywhere you can type. Keep your Name in plain letters so people can still find you in search.

## At a glance

| Works on | Any text you type. Letter styles change A-Z and 0-9, and leave accents, emoji and other alphabets as they are. Line styles such as underline mark every letter. |
| --- | --- |
| Shows | 60 styles: 30 letter styles, such as bold, script, gothic, bubbles and small caps, and 30 with symbols around them. |
| Can't show | A real font change. Instagram has no font setting, so these are look-alike characters, and an older phone may show a box for one. |
| Login | None. You don't need an Instagram account or a password. |
| Cost | Free. |
| Daily limit | None. Copy as many styles as you like. |
| Freshness | The styles follow your text as you type. Favourites stay in this browser until you clear its data. |

## How to use it

1. Type your bio or a caption in the box. All 60 styles change as you type.
2. Tap Copy next to the style you like. Tap the star to keep that style at the top of the list in this browser.
3. In Instagram, go to your profile, tap Edit profile, then Bio, and paste. Save, then look at your profile to check that every symbol shows.

## What a styled letter really is

A styled letter is not a font. It's a different character that looks like a letter. Bold 𝐚 is character U+1D41A, from a block of letters Unicode made for math. Most phones have a font that draws it bold, so on most phones it looks bold wherever you paste it: your bio, a comment or a DM. Some letters were added to Unicode years before the rest of their set. Italic h is ℎ, script B is ℬ and outline R is ℝ, so a generator has to fill those gaps or your word breaks in the middle. We fill all of them. Digits change only where a set has them. Among the math styles, bold, outline, sans, sans bold and typewriter have styled 0-9, while italic and script don't, so their digits stay plain. Each math letter takes two units of storage where a plain letter takes one. Our counter counts what you see, one per letter or emoji, and says "About" because Instagram doesn't say how it counts styled letters toward the 150-character bio limit. If Instagram stops you before 150, cut a few words.

## What it shows

- 30 letter styles: bold, italic, script, gothic, outline, sans, typewriter, small caps, bubbles, squares, wide, tiny and more.
- 30 decorated styles that put stars, wings, flowers, hearts, sparkles or brackets around a letter style.
- Lines through, under or over the letters: strikethrough, underline, double underline, overline, slashed and wavy.
- Upside-down text: small letters flipped and in reverse order. Capitals come out as flipped small letters, and of the digits only 6 and 9 flip.
- A bio preview of the style you copied last, with a count of about how many of the 150 bio characters it uses.
- Favourites, kept in this browser and shown first.

## What it can't show

- Accented letters like é or ñ, other alphabets or emoji in a new letter style. Letter styles change A-Z and 0-9 only; the line styles, like underline, mark any letter.
- Exactly how Instagram counts styled letters toward 150. Treat the count as a guide.
- How every phone will show every symbol. A phone with no font for a symbol shows a box instead.
- Instagram's own story fonts. You pick those in the story editor.

## Questions

### How do I change the font on my Instagram bio?

Instagram has no font setting, so you paste styled letters instead. Type your bio in the box above, tap Copy next to a style, then in Instagram go to Edit profile, tap Bio and paste. The letters keep their style because they are different characters, not a different font. Look at your profile after you save to check that every symbol shows.

### Can I use a different font in my Instagram name?

You can paste one, and it will show. But Instagram search matches the letters in your Name, and styled letters are different characters, so someone who types your name won't find the styled version. Your username still works in search. Most people keep their Name plain and style their bio instead.

### Why do some Instagram fonts show as boxes or question marks?

A phone can only draw a character it has a font for. When it has no font for a rare symbol, it shows a box or a question mark instead, and the same bio can look fine on one phone and broken on another. If you or a friend see boxes, pick a simpler style such as bold, italic or small caps.

### Do fancy fonts count toward Instagram's 150-character bio limit?

Yes, every character counts. Our counter counts what you see, one per letter or emoji. A styled letter takes more storage than a plain one, and Instagram doesn't say which of the two it counts, so the counter says "About". If Instagram won't let you add more before you reach 150, shorten the text.

### Can screen readers read Instagram fonts?

Not well. A screen reader reads a styled letter as a symbol name, or skips it, so a styled bio can sound like a list of math symbols to someone who can't see the screen. Keep the words that matter, like what you do or how to reach you, in plain letters, and style a word or two for looks.

### Why didn't my accents or emoji change style?

Unicode has styled versions of the plain letters A-Z and the digits 0-9, and the letter styles change only those. The line styles, like underline and strikethrough, work on any letter. Letters like é, ñ or ß, other alphabets and emoji stay as you typed them, so the rest of your text is never lost. Tiny text has no small q, so q stays plain there too.
