## 640 px is the largest size Instagram stores

We checked this on November 7, 2026. For every account we checked, Instagram lists a 640 x 640 version of the profile picture, and nothing bigger. The file behind it is only as big as the picture that was uploaded: @instagram's is a real 640 x 640, @natgeo's is 400 x 400, and our small test account's is 348 x 348. We show that file as Instagram stores it, and print its real size under the picture. We don't resize or compress it. A site that shows a profile picture bigger than that is stretching the same file, which adds no detail. On a phone, Instagram crops the picture into a small circle, so the corners you see here are hidden there.

## What it shows

- The profile picture as the whole square, at up to 640 x 640 px.
- A full-screen view you can pinch to zoom on a phone.
- Download picture, or Save to Photos on an iPhone.
- Followers, following and posts above the picture.
- A note when the picture changed since your last look in this browser.

## What it can't show

- Older profile pictures. We only get the one the account uses now.
- Posts, stories or highlights of a private account.
- A sharper picture than the file Instagram keeps, which is 640 px at most.
- Who looked at a profile. Instagram doesn't show that to anyone.

## Questions

### How can I see someone's Instagram profile picture in full size?

Type their username in the box at the top of this page and tap Show the picture. You get the picture as the whole square, at the largest size Instagram stores, up to 640 x 640 pixels. Tap it to open it full screen and zoom in. You don't need to log in.

### Can I view a private account's profile picture?

Yes. On Instagram, the profile picture of a private account is public, and so are its follower and following counts. We show those. Its posts, stories and highlights stay private, and we never show them.

### Will they know I looked at their profile picture?

No. We read the public profile without your Instagram account, so your name can't appear anywhere. Instagram doesn't tell people when someone looks at their profile or their picture.

### How do I save an Instagram profile picture?

Wait for the picture to load, then tap Download picture on a computer or an Android phone. On an iPhone, tap Save to Photos. Downloads often fail inside the Instagram app's own browser, so there, press and hold the picture to save it, or open this page in Safari or Chrome first.

### Why isn't the picture bigger than 640 pixels?

Because 640 x 640 is the largest size Instagram stores for a profile picture, in our tests in November 2026. An insta DP viewer that shows it bigger is enlarging the same file, which makes it larger but not sharper. Here you get Instagram's own file, unchanged. If the picture was uploaded smaller, the file is smaller too, and we show its real size.

### Can I see someone's old profile pictures?

No. We only get the picture the account uses now. If you looked up the same account before in this browser, we tell you when the picture changed since your last look. That note is kept on your device, not on our side.
