About FollowBuddy
FollowBuddy is an Instagram unfollower tracker from Ben Leavitt International Inc. in Ontario, Canada, on the web, iPhone and Android. You download your followers and following from Instagram, upload the file, and it lists who doesn't follow you back. Upload a newer file later and it shows who unfollowed in between. It never asks for your Instagram login. It has 3.25 stars on the US App Store from 122 ratings.
Is FollowBuddy safe?
It doesn't ask for your Instagram login, which removes the biggest risk with apps like this. What it does need is your data file. Your file goes to FollowBuddy's servers in Canada and the US, and its privacy policy says your uploads are kept until you delete them, or for 24 months if you stop using it. A Reddit recommendation says it reads the file on your phone; its own policy says the file is uploaded.
The complaints in its reviews are about money and wrong lists, not hacked accounts. One reviewer reported a suspension without a clear cause.
We don't need a file at all. You type a public username, and we read the public lists through a data provider that collects public profile data.
Is FollowBuddy free?
Partly. Its free tier shows 3 accounts that don't follow you back. The full list and unfollowers need a paid plan. Here, your first check is free and shows real accounts from your lists. Seeing who unfollowed you takes Premium. See current prices.
How FollowBuddy works, and why it takes a while
In Instagram, you request a download of your followers and following, set to All time and JSON. Instagram emails it when it's ready, which FollowBuddy says can take up to an hour. You upload the ZIP without unzipping it. To see unfollowers, you do all of that again a few days later, and FollowBuddy compares the two files.
That routine is what a username checker skips. Type your username and the first check runs right away. With Premium we keep checking for you, so there's nothing to download or upload again.
Why does FollowBuddy show the wrong unfollowers?
The common causes: an export that isn't set to All time, an HTML file instead of JSON, or accounts that were deleted or deactivated, which leave your followers list like an unfollow would. Reviewers mention all three.
The last one affects every tracker, us included: a deleted account looks the same as someone who left. Before we count anyone as gone, we confirm it on a later check.
What FollowBuddy does that we don't
Private accounts. Because it reads your own data file, FollowBuddy works on your account even when it's private. We can't check private accounts at all.
Our other limit: we can't check accounts that follow more than 15,000, and above 15,000 followers we read the following list only. If you'd rather not use any tool, you can compare two data downloads by hand. How we check has the rest.
Questions people ask
Does FollowBuddy need my Instagram password?
No. It works from the data file you download from Instagram, and you sign up with a FollowBuddy account. We don't need a password either, only your public username.
Can FollowBuddy check someone else's account?
No. It reads a data download, and you can only download data for an account you can log into. Here you can check any public account by its username.
Does FollowBuddy show unfollowers right away?
No. Its first upload shows who doesn't follow you back. Unfollowers need a second upload later, on a paid plan. Here, tracking starts the day Premium starts, and nobody can show unfollows from before that.
How do I cancel FollowBuddy?
Where you subscribed: in your Apple or Google Play subscriptions, or in the FollowBuddy web dashboard. Its terms say emailing support doesn't cancel. App store purchases are refunded by Apple or Google.
Does anyone get notified?
No. FollowBuddy reads a file you download, and we read public lists. Nobody is told when you check, here or there.
What's a FollowBuddy alternative without the data download?
Type your public username above. The first check shows real accounts from your lists, with no file and no Instagram login. Premium keeps checking and emails you each unfollow by name.
See who unfollowed you. No download.
Type your public username. Nobody gets notified.
